Prof. Dr. Gotelind Müller-Saini  Culture and history of modern China in an East Asian and international context

China is not only extremely diverse in itself, but also integrated into regional and international contexts.

In her work, Gotelind Mueller-Saini generally deals with Sino-Japanese-Western (including Sino-Russian) cultural exchange processes. Specifically, her work includes topics such as current representations of Chinese and non-Chinese history in China's schools and media, approaches to a regional history of "East Asia", cultural mediators as historical actors, transfer processes of cultural concepts and terms, Sino-Japanese cultural relations since the 19th century, China's handling of cultural heritage, language politics in China, the role of Buddhism and Christianity in modern times, as well as political-cultural movements of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Postdoctoral research scholar and lecturer Dr. Mariana Münning complements this with a focus on linguistics, language reform and language policy in the 20th century.

Representations of History in Chinese Film and Television

The project aims to present visions and representations of history as seen in Chinese film and television, since the image of history in China is not only defined by history textbooks used in schools or scholarly historiography, but more and more popular media like film and television join in the contested process of defining history and its meanings and in shaping the actual historical consciousness of the populace.
