Korea

Korea is an important partner of Germany and has gained significant relevance in recent years for understanding East Asia. Consequently, interest in Korean culture and society has also increased.

With the introduction of Korean Studies in the winter semester 2025/26 as part of the B.A. in East Asian Studies, students will have the opportunity to systematically explore the development of the economy, politics, and society of the Korean Peninsula as well as its integration into international relations.

Working Group

Korean Studies in Heidelberg combine linguistic excellence, interdisciplinary expertise, and an international perspective to offer a unique program focusing on contemporary Korea.

Studies

The Korean Studies major places a focus on solid and practice-oriented linguistic training in modern Korean. In addition to intensive language instruction, students engage in an in-depth academic examination of contemporary Korean society, culture, politics, and economy.

Research

With the support of the Seed Program for Korean Studies of the Academy of Korean Studies, two projects have been initiated at Heidelberg University. The aim of these initiatives is to establish Korean Studies at the university on a long-term basis and to further strengthen the presence of Korean culture and society within the academic landscape.
