Course structure and content

Korean Studies can be studied as a major (50%) or minor (25%) subject at Heidelberg University as part of the Bachelor’s programme in East Asian Studies. The standard duration of the BA programme in East Asian Studies is six semesters, including the BA module. Please note that it is not possible to study East Asian Studies with a 75% course load.

As a major, the study programme comprises three key areas: Language proficiency, which is developed systematically from the basics up to the proficiency required for passing the TOPIK Korean language test at level 4 or above; subject-specific expertise, which primarily encompasses knowledge of the society, politics, history, culture and economy of modern Korea; and expertise on the larger East Asian regional context, including China, Japan and neighboring countries.

Alternatively, by choosing one of the two minor options offered, students can also complement their major with either a thorough knowledge of modern Korean (including language proficiency at TOPIK Level 4), or with specialist knowledge of Korea and East Asia.

Please be aware that certain subject combinations are generally not permitted within the BA in East Asian Studies. You can find details of these in the examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung). If you are unsure whether your preferred subject combination is possible, please use Heidelberg University’s "Studiengangsfinder" or contact the relevant subject-specific academic advisor.

Please note that, as all undergraduate programmes at Heidelberg University, the Korean Studies programme is conducted primarily in German, and prospective international students will have to provide proof of sufficient German language skills (at a level of DSH-2 or higher) in order to be eligible to enrol. More information on the language requirements for international students at Heidelberg University can be found on the university website.

More complete information as well as all required documents can be found on the German version of this page.
