Institute of Chinese Studies Doctorates

A doctorate in Chinese Studies can be obtained in one of the six research areas at the institute. Possible topics range from classical literature and philosophy to contemporary society and politics in Greater China. The diverse and interdisciplinary structure of our institute allows for a wide range of specialisations.

Prerequisites

The prerequisite for admission to a doctoral programme at our institute is the completion of an above-average master's degree in Chinese Studies or a comparable subject. The requirements are stipulated in detail by the doctoral degree regulations of the Faculty of Philosophy. Any special regulations are also listed there.

A doctorate proves one’s ability to conduct independent scientific research. The successful completion of a doctoral degree therefore involves two separate tasks:

  • completing a scientific thesis (dissertation) in the field of Chinese Studies;
  • passing an oral examination (disputatio) on the topic of the dissertation.

Dissertations may be completed in either German or English.

Process and subsequent steps

Establishing contact

To begin with, choose a specialization and contact the corresponding research area (professor in charge) at the institute. Your e-mail should contain the following:

  • your C.V. in table form
  • copies of your academic diplomas
  • if appropriate: references, in case you are not yet acquainted with the professor in question.

Confirmation of supervision

Before applying to the Faculty, you are required to obtain written confirmation of supervision by your prospective supervisor.

Submission of documents at the Faculty

Hand in your documents at the Faculty of Philosophy alongside your confirmation of supervision. Detailed information regarding this process can be found on the Faculty’s website. The final decision on your admission as a doctoral student resides with the Faculty.

Enrolment

After being successfully admitted, you are required to enroll at Heidelberg University. All admitted doctoral candidates in Baden-Württemberg are legally obliged to enroll from the moment of admission and remain enrolled for the entire duration of their doctoral studies.
