Studies PHD
A doctorate in Japanese Studies at Heidelberg University means embarking on an in-depth academic examination of Japan.
This usually takes place within the framework of individual supervision by a member of the professorial staff. Supervision is available in particular in the field of literature by Prof. Dr. Judit Árokay and in the field of history by Prof. Dr. Hans Martin Krämer.

The doctoral program aims to produce an independent academic thesis that contributes to research in the field of Japanese studies. Doctoral students deepen their specialist knowledge, acquire specialized skills, and learn to work independently on complex issues.
The prerequisite for a doctoral program is usually an above-average master's degree in Japanese Studies or a related subject, as well as a very good knowledge of Japanese.
Interested candidates are asked to contact a professor at an early stage and arrange a consultation.
