Exchange Programs Study abroad

BA and MA students of East Asian Art History have several options to study abroad. Even though a stay abroad is not a mandatory component of our undergraduate and graduate programs, we recommend students take advantage of this opportunity to learn Chinese or Japanese in an immersive environment and to conduct fieldwork.

Auslandsaufenthalt

The institute also welcomes international students through exchange programs. We recommend that students get acquainted with the options described on the university webpage.

Exchange Programs

BA and MA students at the Institute of East Asian Art History (IKO) can apply for exchange programs offered by the Division of International Relations or for the special exchange programs offered by the Institutes of Sinology and Japanese Studies.

Students interested in applying for an exchange through the Institutes of Sinology and Japanese Studies must make sure that they fulfill all the language course requirements before applying. All requirements and procedures to apply are described on the institutes’ pages. We recommend contacting the exchange program coordinators before applying.

Students should plan their application in advance and contact IKO faculty to request recommendation letters 4 weeks before the deadline.

Recognition of Credits

Basic information on the recognition of credits earned abroad can be found on the university webpage. The recognition of academic credits is subject to the regulations developed by the Faculty of Philosophy at Heidelberg University, which comply with the Lisbon Convention on the Recognition of Academic Achievements Obtained Abroad.

If you are planning a stay abroad, you must complete a Learning Agreement with the Academic Advisor at the Institute of East Asian Art History before your departure. The Learning Agreement will outline the credits to be earned during your stay and their recognition after your return from abroad. Changes and additions can be made during your stay abroad in consultation with the Academic Advisor.

For credits to be recognized, courses abroad must be matched to a specific course required for one of the modules in the study guide. For more details, please consult the handout for credit recognition (in German). The course description at your host institution abroad must provide a clear connection to East Asian Art History and the type of evaluation, as well as the number of weekly class hours, and must be equivalent to the requirements described in our study guide. To avoid problems with credit transfer, please inform the Academic Advisor of any changes to your plans as soon as possible.

Credits earned abroad must be submitted to the IKO Academic Advisor upon your return. Internships may also be completed abroad after consultation with the Academic Advisor.

Please note that the recognition of language courses (Chinese and Japanese) completed abroad is only possible after consultation with the Sinology or Japanese Studies departments! Students planning to take language courses for credit can read the rules and regulations published by the institutes.
