Tools and Platforms for Study Organization Managing Your Studies
Students can manage their courses and exams on the online platform HeiCo. This page provides information on course registration specific to IKO, as well as details about attendance and exam retakes.
Checking of your academic progress, course plans, exam registration, changing of major or minor and other processes related to your studies can be managed through Heidelberg University’s online platform HeiCO.
The office hours of the HeiCo Helpdesk are listed on the university’s Service Portal for Students.
Detailed course information, such as readings, assignments, and assessment criteria, can be found on the e-learning platform Moodle. To enroll for a course on Moodle a password is required, which is usually provided by the teacher during the first session of a course. Moodle can only be accessed from the network of Heidelberg University (eduroam) or via the VPN Cisco Secure Client.
Registering for courses
Currently there is no course registration via HeiCO for IKO courses. Students from other institutes interested in taking a course can contact the teacher to clarify any doubts.
For some courses, a prior course registration with the teacher is necessary. If that is the case, it will be mentioned in the course’s description in the course catalogue.
Registering for exams
The period for exam registration and deregistration through HeiCO is announced well in advance at the start of each semester. If you do not wish or are unable to complete a course after registering for the exam, please deregister. Missing the deadline to de-register will result in failing the course.
Attendance
Regular attendance is mandatory for all courses. Students should not miss more than two sessions of a course unexcused, or they will not receive credit points. For students attending the courses or block seminars taught by the Heinz-Götze-Stiftung or Ishibashi Foundation guest professors, perfect attendance is mandatory to receive credit points.
Students may be excused in case of sickness and personal emergency and are asked to submit a doctor’s note to the teachers. Students who are unable to attend an exam due to illness should also inform the teacher and submit a doctor’s note. Missing an exam without providing proof will be counted as a failed attempt.
Re-taking exams
The rules for retaking exams are described in detail in the examination guide for each program. Students are allowed to fail an exam once and retake it at the beginning of the following term. Please contact the teacher in advance to register for the retake or schedule the resubmission of a term paper or thesis.
Only in exceptional cases are students allowed to retake an exam twice. A second resubmission of a MA or BA thesis is not permitted.
Examinations Board of the Faculty of Philosophy (Prüfungsausschuss)
The Examinations Board monitors the compliance with exam regulations and serves as the contact point for examination-related questions. Petitions or requests to the Examinations Board must be submitted through the Examination Office of the Faculty of Philosophy.
