Counselling and Guidance Contact and Support
When students face challenges that the institute is not equipped to help them with, there are several contact points at the university and other organizations that offer support and guidance to students. A first contact point is the university service portal for students.
Our administrative office (Sekretariat) can help students with general inquiries, while questions concerning the study programs can be directed to our academic advisor and HeiCo manager.
Psychosocial Counselling Service
Exam nerves, financial worries, problems in your relationship or stressful events can make life difficult. The Psychosocial Counselling Service for students has a large, competent team of psychologists who will stand by you in difficult times. Conversations with the PCS are free of charge and completely confidential. Contact the secretary's office to make an appointment. Counselling is also available in English.
The Faculty of Philosophy has also nominated a contact person for psychosocial and study-related emergencies, Prof. Dr. Gerrit Kloss: gerrit.kloss@skph.uni-heidelberg.de
Discrimination, Sexual Harassment and Stalking
The Centre for East Asian Studies has nominated internal advisors for confidential dialogue on issues concerning discrimination and sexual harassment.
If you have been a victim or have witnessed sexual harassment or abuse of students or other members of the Institute, please do not hesitate to contact the appointed advisors. This also applies if you are unsure whether the incident constitutes sexual harassment or abuse.
- Institute of Japanese Studies: Prof. Dr. Hans Martin Krämer
- Institute of East Asian Art History: Prof. Dr. Sarah Fraser
- Institute of Sinology: e-mail contact point
You may also get in touch with the specialists at Heidelberg University’s UNIFY or consult the brochure on sexual harassment, stalking and bullying and preventive measures.
Equality and Diversity
The UNIFY office also offers counseling and receives complaints concerning issues of equality and diversity. Through UNIFY students can find advice and specialists who can help them overcome problems related to discrimination, juggling family and academic responsibilities, as well as on self-care. The office helps students seeking help to quickly find support within the university system and choose from various options for approaching persons they can trust.
Pregnancy
Students who become pregnant are asked to officially inform the academic advisor by using a standard form available on the university website. This is to ensure that students receive the necessary legal protection during and after pregnancy. The Equal Opportunities Commissioner helps students during this phase and can also be contacted after childbirth to receive support when resuming your studies.
Disability and Illness
Students with disabilities, chronic illness, or mental/physical limitations can contact the Inclusive Studies team to receive individual advice and to ensure that they are given the infrastructure and support to participate in all areas of university life and that the conditions for them to succeed in their studies are guaranteed.
