Economy, State, and Society of Contemporary China Current Research Projects
Echowall
Echowall is a collaborative research platform based at Heidelberg University born out of an increasing need in Europe for sound and in-depth knowledge about contemporary China. It recognizes that fact-based research should be informed by a wide range of experts in both Europe and China and that it should be accessible to a broad audience.

EuroHub4Sino – Interconnected China Knowledge in Europe
Against the backdrop of China's growing global influence, Europe faces the challenge of grasping China's social, political and economic dynamics in a nuanced way. At the same time, the institutional fragmentation of China-related expertise within Europe makes it difficult to develop coherent and well-informed policies. This is where the EU-funded EuroHub4Sino consortium comes in. It pursues an integrated approach to strengthening independent China expertise in Europe by pooling current research and providing an open network to make it accessible and link it to the academia, the economic sector, as well as civil society.

ChiNATURE
This project is part of an EU-funded consortium and examines the challenges and opportunities China finds itself faced with in addressing its environmental, climate and resource-related problems. In this framework, we examine the development and implementation of environmental laws and regulations in China on the one hand, and China's climate strategy, including the role of renewable and fossil energy production, on the other. Furthermore, resource policy and management within the country and across borders are also taken into account. Through qualitative research, including case studies, expert interviews, and statistical analyses, the project aims to develop a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationships between environmental, climate and resource policy in China.

EMERGE: Dynamics in China's south-western border regions
(Infrastructure and the remaking of Asia through adapting, orchestrating and cooperating, DFG)
This research project is concerned with dimensions of weak and strong statehood in ethnically heterogeneous regions. Trade and migration often transform Chinese border towns into prospering economic centres that contrast sharply with neighbouring regions. China's push for infrastructure development also has a cross-border impact on the areas bordering Tibet, Yunnan and Guangxi. In this project, empirical case studies are used to examine the resulting dynamics impacting the people inhabiting the regions from the Eastern Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal (south-western China, Myanmar, Bangladesh and north-eastern India).

Global Korea: Mobility of people, goods, and ideas
(Global Korea: transnational mobility of people, goods, and ideas, Academy of Korean Studies)
In this research project, we examine the historical, cultural and socio-economic significance of transnational mobilities of people, goods and ideas for the interaction between Asia (especially Korea) and Europe. In this context, we are particularly interested in the relationship between the mobility of people and other elements such as ideas, capital, and goods.
