Institute of East Asian Art History Institute

The Institute of East Asian Art History (IKO) at Heidelberg University is an international center for the study of East Asian visual and material culture, focusing on the arts of China and Japan, and addressing arts of Inner Asia, India and Korea.

IKO draws on the strengths of its institutional networks, collaborations, and outreach to strengthen research and teaching. As one of the three institutes that constitute the Centre for East Asian Studies (ZO) and as part of the Centre for Asian and Transcultural Studies (CATS), IKO students and researchers have access to the CATS Library, with specialized collections for East Asia, South Asian Studies, Ethnology and Transcultural Studies. In addition to course offerings by faculty and teaching staff, the Institute annually hosts Visiting Professors from universities, research centers and museums worldwide, made possible with generous support from the Heinz-Götze-Stiftung and the Ishibashi Foundation. Our BA, MA and PhD programs prepare students for careers as academics, museums curators and experts at auction houses, publishing houses and in other professions in the field of culture mediation.
