Taiwan Lecture Series - Sommersemester 2016

OBERSEMINAR (Quellenlektüre und Analyse):

Taiwan Lecture Series 2016: Re-Reading Gender and Politics in Taiwan in Memory and Practice

This semester’s Taiwan Lecture Series which deals with the question of Taiwan’s special status vis-à-vis the mainland from different perspectives: the literary and artistic, through a joint close reading and analysis of Lung Ying-tai’s work Big River, Big Sea — Untold Stories of 1949, and a series of workshops on Women and Taiwan literature and the making of literary memory, including one with Lung Ying-tai herself, and finally, a workshop on gender and politics in Taiwan. The seminar will include students’ active participation in creating short literary translations from Big River, Big Sea to be performed in a public recitation of this (and perhaps also other works) by Lung Ying-tai.

Sessions are usually on Wednesdays from 11-13 (see course plan below). The course includes active participation in the workshop with Lung Yingtai (6.7.2016) and Huang Chang-ling (7.7.2016). Students are expected to participate in all three parts of the class: the translation section (part 1, including their preparing a literary translation which will be performed at the Lung Ying-tai workshop), the two workshops itself (part 2 and 3 with students participating as discussants and, in part 3 with regular seminar preparations, response papers etc.).

This course is open to Master Level Students with proficient Chinese (HSK 5/6 and higher). It can be taken as a Oberseminar (2SWS)* as Quellenlektüre und Analyse or as Wissenschaftsdiskurs in the MA (different course requirements then apply, please contact the teacher). BA students whose Chinese is sufficiently fluent can take this course by special permission to substitute for Textlektüre or Hörverständnis (again, different course requirements apply in these cases, please contact the teacher).

*The seminar can be upgraded to a 3 SWS seminar if additional course requirements are fulfilled.
