Duration:

March 2014 – December 2015

Contents:

The project focuses on on-site training sessions and field trips. Students taking part in the program will participate in field trips and workshops that will be held in China throughout 2014 and 2015. The phases in between these sessions are to be used by participants to independently conduct research on the topic of their choice and develop research reports.

Supervision and support will be provided by the principal project coordinators in Heidelberg, Beijing, and Chengdu.

Three major research trips, connected to workshop sessions, will includes visits to major libraries, archives, and museum collections in Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai, and the Guangzhou region.

Schedule:

  • July 2014Research trip

    Beijing, 9 days, visit of museums, libraries, and archives in the capital

  • Summer 2014 – Spring 2015Independent research

    Students conduct independent research on topics they have chosen in conjunction with the project. Financing of library visits or the collection of oral history will be supported through the scholarship.

  • December 2014Research trip

    Chengdu and Chongqing region, 14 days, workshop and library training sessions, visits to Sichuan Provincial Museum, Anren museum cluster, Sanxia museum, Beibei Library Chongqing, Sichuan University Library, Chengdu Municipal Library, etc.

  • Spring – Summer 2015Independent research

     

  • August 2015Museum roundtrip

    Guangzhou and Shanghai region, 14 days, visits to Guangzhou Fine Arts Museum, collections of Zhejiang Painting Academy (Hangzhou), Pang Xunqin Memorial Museum, etc.

  • September – December 2015Report Phase

    Students are encouraged, but not obliged, to transform their reports into articles or other forms of academic writing. Participants have the right to publish their results independently from the "Ethnographic Eye."

 

Please note: a detailed itinerary and travel objectives will be send to participants after the application interviews.

Covered Costs:

The scholarship covers expenses for accommodation and international travel / domestic travel costs within China throughout the three major field trip and mentoring sessions. In addition to these major research trips, additional funds will be provided in the form of a travel stipend for each student participant in order to conduct independent research.
