Taiwan Lecture Series: Taiwan in Film

Our Taiwan Lecture Series this semester features documentary and fictional films from Taiwan in the long twentieth century—from contemporary times back to the period of Japanese rule. The Lecture Series will feature one of the most representative works each of Taiwan’s 4 best film directors. All of these films reflect social developments and value transformations in Taiwan. The Series also features 3 documentary films and will invite the film makers as visitors to the seminar. Their documentaries provide us with each a different glimpse into a very personal story. From every one of these documentaries, we will be able to understand another slice of the social stratum in Taiwan—from elite lawyer to comfort woman—as well as the impact of politics in Taiwan.

Each Class Session has two components:

  1. Film Screenings (usually Wednesday 18-20 or 20-22—depending on whether public talks are scheduled between 18-20)
  2. Discussion Meetings (usually Thursday 11-13)

Requirements:
Depending on student’s needs, the class can be taken as an Oberseminar. In exceptional cases it can be taken as a Hauptseminar (Chinese needs to be sufficient). Films will be screened in Chinese and English, class discussions will be in Chinese and English. There will be readings for each film. Students have to prepare a critical summary (1 page) of these readings before each class. At the end, students are required to write a full seminar paper. This course can be also be taken as Wissenschaftsdiskurs (MA), students will then have to prepare their abstracts and a final essay on one of the films and its background in Chinese.
