The Elephant & the Ant: Chinese & Thai Art in the 1980's & 90's

Abstract

The conceptual construction which replicates a still-dominant but increasingly anachronistic binary between ‘China’ and ‘West’ only has validity inside some kind of cultural essentialism on either side of the divide. It is now more appropriate to compare modern and contemporary Chinese art with non-Euramerican models which might produce a different perspective on the commonalities and differences which allow us to imagine, if not more precisely construct, a typology of parallel and putatively ‘Asian modernities’. To this end the paper will present some of the results of research which has examined contemporary Chinese art in comparison with that of Thailand from a global perspective.
