Exhibition at CATS Library Pu Quan (1912–1991) – From Imperial Prince to Proletarian Painter
The Institute of East Asian Art History at Heidelberg University invites you to the opening of the exhibition, "Pu Quan (1912–1991): From Imperial Prince to Proletarian Painter," on view starting December 8, 2025, in the Center for Asian Studies and Transcultural Studies Library. In addition to an introduction to the exhibition, guests can enjoy a live painting performance and an evening lecture titled "The Ashmolean Collection of Modern Chinese Painting" by Shelagh Vainker, Curator of Chinese Art at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Discover the extraordinary legacy of Pu Quan, one of the most fascinating figures in modern Chinese painting. The exhibition invites visitors to trace his inspiring journey from imperial prince to proletarian artist. His works are complemented by painted fans created by Heidelberg students during a workshop with Hengjin Aisin Gioro, Pu Quan’s granddaughter.
Organized in cooperation with the Confucius Institute Heidelberg, the exhibition is part of the “Ink & Oil” project, which is supported by the Getty Foundation’s “Connecting Art Histories” initiative. The exhibition also honors the Heinz-Götze Foundation’s 15 years of support for the Chinese Art History program at Heidelberg University.
